A little about Me

Hello, my name is Evan Calkins and I run a small design studio called Intrinsic. I have a passion of web design and interfacing, as well as my local community. I like to approach business at a local, personal level, and I like to drink coffee. If you have happened to stumble upon this weblog apart from the intrinsic business site, feel free to check it out.

I’m happy to announce the new Lewis County Republican central committee’s web-site was launched Tuesday Morning! Be sure to check it out and offer any feedback you may have.

Here are some features the LCR web-site was built with:

  • Automatic RSS feed from Headlines
  • A “Related Articles” feature which uses tags to link similar articles to one another.
  • A full featured Wordpress Blog skinned to match the web-site.
  • A fully dynamic Resource section.
  • A customizable front ‘Block’ which allows the party to switch between important announcements and a political cartoon gallery.

The LCR Web-site was built on Intrinsic’s new Content Management System which gives them the ability to update content as often as they want without calling me up!

Hope you like it!

I’m happy to say that Intrinsic Studio has had an incredible first year of business, and are eagerly awaiting what may develop in 2008 as a company. I’ve been able to meet so many incredible people these last several months and serve some incredible clients as well!

Many changes are in store for Intrinsic Studio in 2008 including a repertoire of marketing and information materials to better assist our clients. In addition, Intrinsic Studio has been, as of today, officially re-branded with a new logo and image that better suits our upcoming creative angle. And here it is:

New Intrinsic Branding

In addition to the new logo, a new web-site is in the works for mid 2008. Please let me know what you think of the new look! I wish you an amazing 2008!

Intrinsic CMS is Here!

Filed under: Resources, Notices — admin @ 1:49 pm

What is a CMS?
Intrinsic Studio’s new custom Content Management System is finally complete and works great! A content management system is basically a password protected back-end users can log into to add, delete, or change the content of their web-site without having to know anything about web languages or how websites even work.

Why Intrinsic CMS?
Intrinsic CMS is unique in the fact that is is extremely simple and intuitive to use. There is nothing you don’t need present on the CMS interface so as to relieve confusion. The looks and colors of the CMS is also completely customizable so it can blend in to your current look and branding.

Who Can Utilize Intrinsic CMS?
Anybody with a website that would like to have control over their content can greatly benefit from Intrinsic CMS! This is a great solution for website owners who often find their content becoming out of date or stagnant with time and don’t want to call a webmaster every time a change needs done.

What Can Intrinsic CMS Actually Do?

  • Add, Edit, and Delete text.
  • Upload Images, Galleries, PDFs, and other documents to your website.
  • Create Calendar Events.
  • Manage your links.
  • And many other uses…

So, What does it actually look like?
I’m glad you asked! If you are interested in viewing the Intrinsic CMS interface, contact me and I’d be happy to send you a demo link!

New Intrinsic Office

Filed under: Business, Notices — admin @ 4:10 pm

I’ve finally escaped the bouts with squeaky toys and smelly diapers this week: I’ve moved into a new office. Is was definitely nice to work at home while it lasted, but I’ve come to appreciate a quiet, designated area to meet clients and get things done. I’ve un-cleverly named my office ‘My Space,’ mainly to celebrate my great feat of not actually using ‘My Space.’

Apart from the joy of having a nice smelling office and seeing real people throughout my day, I’ve enjoyed having the opportunity to grab a space within the newly renovated / restored Stahl building in downtown Centralia, Washington. I love being downtown and being able to walk to a coffee shop or grab a bite to eat that is not Top-Ramen or canned soup. Perhaps you will have the opportunity to visit me soon!

Here is my new Address:

Intrinsic Studio
106 West Pine Street Suite 11
Centralia, Washington 98531

Intrinsic Featured in CSS Showcases

Filed under: Notices — admin @ 10:14 pm

As I was doing my nightly site stats check on Urchin I noticed my page-views experienced an incredible spike today. After checking my referrals I found a pleasant surprise: my site has been featured on the popular css showcase site cssmania. It has also managed to find its way on two other showcase sites called mostinspired.com and netvibes.com. Pretty cool!

For the first year of business, I will be giving a 10% of the total project cost to anyone who refers business to me: no questions asked. Be sure to let me know who referred you so they can get rewarded.

The Launch of Intrinsic Studio

Filed under: General, Notices — admin @ 11:13 am

Well, today is the official launching of the Intrinsic Studio Web-page! Between changing diapers, watching 24 and working on finishing up some other clients work I’ve finally wrapped it up. There were a few goals I wanted to achieve by launching the web-page:

  1. Communicate my passion for my local community and personal connection. I want people to be able to know they can call, or meet with me at any time and for any reason. I realize that many business connections can survive on phone calls and emails, but I love face to face interaction. I believe it sets a stage for trust and reliability.
  2. A simplified portfolio. At first, I planned to create a robust portfolio outlining the process and details that went into each project. I soon realized that when I view other designers portfolios I want to see work fast. I really don’t care about the details. I want to see the final product, and I want to be able to visit the site, and quickly return back to view more of their work. With this in mind, I created a blog style portfolio giving simple screenshots of each project, all on the same page.
  3. Quick, web-based estimates. I’ve created a quick and simple page where inquiries can be made, and a promise to return them within an hour of there submission. I want people to realize I’m never to busy for them and take their inquiries seriously.
